Film overhauls image of indigenous tourism

More to Indigenous tourism than dust

A new short film, ‘Our Country is waiting for you,’ aims to change the perception of indigenous tourism.

Funded by Tourism Australia and Austrade, the three minute film steers clear of dry and dusty perceptions and showcases a range of beachfront and rainforest locations around Australia.

Acclaimed film makers Brendan Fletcher and Warwick Thornton were asked to make the film after years of declines in the number of overseas visitors seeking Aboriginal experiences.

Figures suggest that only 14 per cent of overseas visitors took part in an indigenous experience in the last year.

Tourism Australia’s John O’Sullivan, said, “We’re confident this new short film, and our plans to make sure it is widely distributed both in Australia and over-seas, will help promote this important facet of Australian tourism and grow these figures.”
