Adventure travel hero dies

It is with deep regret that we record the death of the adventurer and travel industry icon Tony Laurent and offer our condolences and support to his family – especially his wife Lolita and daughter Jessie – and to his business at this difficult time.
A real life hero to be admired and now venerated by all free spirited travellers, Tony will perhaps be best remembered as the man who sailed a Hobie 18 catamaran across the Atlantic Ocean, going on to compete in the Julies Venrne Challenge, around the world and cross Atlantic races.
Tony was owner/director of airliebeach.com Travel and Internet Centre about which he said, on winning a prestigious ‘best small travel agent in Australia’ Golden Backpacks Award: “We have a very simple mantra – put the right people on the right trips and in the right accommodation and they come back happy. That’s the thing my wife and I have always adhered to. We’ve always said that honesty and integrity are what it’s all about and we’re lucky to have great local Whitsundays staff that reflect those principles.”
This week, those staff members said it had to be “business as usual” in order to continue Tony’s legacy.
Colleagues at Airlie Chamber of Commerce, of which he was President, said of him, “Tony was a great leader and we will miss him very much,” while TNT magazine’s general manager for Australia Jaqui Ward, said, “It is very sad – he was one of my very favourite clients; someone it was a joy to catch up with.”
