Bookings are now open for Independent Travel Exchange (ITE), the Adventure & Backpacker Industry Conference (ABiC) and the Golden Backpack Awards, which take place in Sydney on November 3-4.
This year’s conference line-up includes Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy, Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler and Gapyear.com founder Tom Griffiths. The morning will feature a debate on the virtues or otherwise of discounting while the afternoon will see breakout sessions on the education sector, connecting backpackers to jobs, social media and ethical/sustainable tourism. Appointment-based trade networking event Independent Travel Exchange (ITE) is sponsored by peak English language sector body English Australia (EA) for the first time this year. EA has been working hard to forge closer links with the backpacker sector, with executive director Sue Blundell joining the Backpacker Tourism Advisory Panel (BTAP) to become its first education representative earlier this year. EA joins Adventure Tours Australia and Gold Coast Adventure Travel Group, both of whom sponsored last year’s inaugural event.
Meanwhile, votes continue to pour in for the Golden Backpack Awards, with the number of online voting forms already running into thousands. The awards will be presented at a gala dinner at Sydney’s Star City Casino on November 4, with a special guest presenter to be announced in the next few weeks.
