Travel companies looking online to spend their way out of recession

Travel companies are looking to the web to spend their way out of recession, according to new figures from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).  

The latest IAB report shows travel and accommodation accounted for nearly A$9.5 million of all general display advertising expenditure out of Australia in the second quarter of 2009 compared t0 $8.8 million from January to March ’09 and $7.6 million in the last quarter of 2008.

The sector breaks down as follows:-

– flights $3.91 million

– accommodation $1.67 million

– car hire $270,000

– holiday packages/agents $1.1 million

– other $2.54 million

In the period January to June 2009, travel and accommodation represented a 7.8 per cent share of all online display advertising out of Australia compared to 6.2 per cent during the previous six months.

The figures are compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the IAB. Although most of Australia’s major online players take part in providing the tracking survey with data, Google does not.
